SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) is a widely-usedcircuit simulation program. It was developed as public domain software at theUniversity of California and versions 2G6 (vanilla SPICE) and 3.0 are stillused. The device models and simulation algorithms in vanilla SPICE areexcellent but the user interface is unacceptable by today's standards (forexample the graphical output is intended for line-printers). There are nownumerous commercial variants of SPICE available which have large libraries ofdevice models, more sophisticated analysis options and, most importantly,modern graphical tools for interpreting the simulation results. At Aston twocommercial variants of SPICE are available:

PSPICE by MicroSim Corporation. This is available at Aston on IBMPC-compatibles and Apple Macintoshes but both are restricted versions whichwill only operate on very small circuits. The PC version does not require amaths coprocessor but will use one if it is present. It runs extremely slowlywithout a coprocessor. The Macintosh version requires a coprocessor or acoprocessor emulator. It runs unbelievably slowly with an emulatedcoprocessor. These restricted versions of PSPICE are public domain softwareand you can take copies to run on your own machines if you wish. Refer to thedocument 'PSPICE User Guide' for more information.

HSPICE by Meta Software. This is available at Aston on the SunWorkstations. This is probably the most powerful version of SPICE available.It is highly optimised and will take advantage of specialised floating pointhardware in Sparc1, Sparc2 and Sparc10 processors. It will handle circuits ofalmost any size (e.g. 250,000 gate simulations at transistor level) and runsvery quickly. This document covers the basic information required to prepare acircuit description for HSPICE simulation on a Sun workstation, run thesimulation and then examine the results using the graphical analysis programViewTrace. It assumes you have a working knowledge of the use of Sun SPARCworkstations (logging on, file handling, window manipulation using the OpenLook Window Manager etc.). An on-line tutorial is provided for using theOpenWindows system on the Suns.

1.1 TYPOGRAPHICAL CONVENTIONS

The following conventions are used throughout this guide:
  • HSPICE is the industry's 'gold standard' for accurate circuit simulation and offers foundry-certified MOS device models with state-of-the-art simulation and analysis algorithms. With over 25 years of successful design tapeouts, HSPICE is the industry's most trusted and comprehensive circuit simulator.
  • We start off with a piece of software which is of interest to a tightly-focussed group of folk - a port of the Spice electronic circuit simulation program to. Paid Kiva Design Group Mac OS.

There is no explanation and it should not beregarded as a substitute for reading the rest of the documentation and learningto use the software properly.

1. Log on to a workstation with your own user name and password. AllowOpenWindows to start up.

2. In the command tool type powerview& to start thePowerview cockpit running (as a background process).

3. Using the Left mouse button select the Current toolbox menu. From theoptions choose the toolbox 'Aston Signals and Systems'.

4. Using the Left mouse button select Project È Create.

5. When the dialogue box appears, in the section Project type, select ViewDraw.Then enter a project name of the form ~/project-name, whereproject-name is your chosen name. Do not omit the tilde (~)character which refers to your home directory

6. Double click Left on the TextEdit icon in the cockpit. When promptedfor an HSPICE source file name, Enter example1.hsp . The editor willask you to confirm that you want to create a new file. Wait for the texteditor to start up.

7. Enter the file below:

8. Pull down the File menu of the text editor and select Save File.

9. Double-click the left mouse button on the HSPICE icon in the Powerviewcockpit. You will be prompted for an HSPICE file name (if you have previouslyrun HSPICE the filename will already be there). Enter the filenameexample1 and click on 'Accept'.

10. HSPICE will run and you will see a message in the Powerview cockpit log.If you see the message *** HSPICE job concluded then continue to step 12. Ifyou see the message *** HSPICE job aborted then proceed to step 11.

11. In the TextEdit window use File Open to select the fileexample1.lis . Try and determine why HSPICE failed. If possible,correct example1.hsp with the text editor and repeat step 9.

12. Double-click the left mouse button on the ViewTrace icon in the Powerviewcockpit. After a while you will see the ViewTrace File Open dialogue box.Select the 'All' box with the left mouse button. You should see (among others)the files example1.ac0 and example1.tr0. Selectexample1.ac0 and then click on 'Accept'.

13. A ViewTrace waveform window should appear with two vertical axes - AVoltage axis with three traces V(1), V(2) and V(3),and a Current axis with a single trace I(Vin).

14. Select File È Open from the ViewTrace menu bar. From theFile Open dialogue box select example1.tr0 . When the waveform windowopens you will see the transient response with the same voltage and currentaxes as the AC response.

15. Click the red square menu and quit each Powerview program in turn.

16. Now read the rest of this guide.HSPICE can be run in command line mode but, since you will need to use theViewlogic ViewTrace tool to analyse the simulation results, you may find iteasier to perform all your HSPICE work from within the Viewlogic Powerviewenvironment.

Start Powerview (as a background process) by entering the command:

powerview &.

You will then see the Powerview Cockpit.

Create a new project (or set your current project to an existing project) bypulling down the Project menu and select Project È Create orProject È Set Current. When you next run Powerview your previousproject setting will be remembered.

Select the Current Toolbox to Aston Signals and Systems. The Powerviewcockpit should then appear as in Fig. 3.1.

The Signals and Systems toolbox has just one drawer called Signals andSystems Design which holds three tools: TextEdit, HSPICE and ViewTrace. Tolaunch a tool just double-click on the appropriate icon. You can leave boththe editor and ViewTrace running and open different HSPICE source files anddata files respectively from within them. You will need to re-launch theHSPICE simulator each time you use it.

The design flow is shown in Fig. 3.2. The programs are represented byrectangles. Circles represent files. The text inside the circles shows theappropriate file extension. Use the file extension .hsp for sourcefiles. All other file extensions are automatically generated.

When you launch HSPICE you will see a prompt (see Fig. 3.3) for an HSPICEsource file. Enter just the first part of the filename. Do not give a fileextension such as .hsp.

When HSPICE runs you will see a status message in the Powerview Cockpit logwindow. HSPICE should exit with a status code of zero. If this is not so thenyou will need to check the log file (.lis) to determine the cause.

When the simulation has finished you should always check the .lis filefor errors (using the editor) before attempting any graphical analysis of theresults. In addition the results of some analysis tools are reported in thisfile.

In the HSPICE syntax descriptions the following typographical conventions areused:

4.1 GENERAL RESTRICTIONS ON DATA FORMAT

HSPICE uses a semi-free format for data with a few restrictions:

* Upper and lower case are not distinguished except in Unix filenames.

* Lines may be no longer than 80 characters. Lines may be continued byentering a plus sign (+) in column 1 of the next line

* Names must begin with a letter and must not contain spaces or otherdelimiters. Only the first 16 characters of names are significant.

* Numbers may be written as integers (2, -347), floating point (3.141, 4.6) orfloating point with exponent (1E3, 5.62E6). Integer or floating point numbersmay be followed by any of the scale factors below.

4.2 FILE STRUCTURE

The basic structure of an HSPICE file is:

The first statement in an HSPICE file must be a title statement and the lastmust be the end statement (.END). The other Statements may be in any order.

4.3 NETLIST (CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION)

The elements in the circuit to be simulated are defined to HSPICE by numbering(or naming) all of the nodes (junctions of components). If node numbers areused they must be positive but need not be consecutive. The ground orreference node is indicated by node number 0 or node name GND. Every node(except transmission lines) must have at least two connections and must have aDC path to ground.

Each circuit element must have its characteristics defined to the HSPICEprogram. In general the type of element is indicated by the first letter ofthe component name. If more sophisticated device characteristics are used thena .MODEL statement is required.

4.3.1.1 Subcircuits

Circuits may be described in a hierarchical manner by using sub-circuitdescriptions. There are two parts to this. First the sub-circuit is definedwith the .SUBCKT statement. Then the sub-circuit is called with an elementwhose name starts with an X.

4.3.1.2 Device Models

The initial letter of a component only specifies that it is a generic resistor,capacitor, transistor etc. For some purpose this may suffice but there arethousands of different devices with widely varying properties. The .MODELstatement is used to specify device characteristics and which 'model' of thedevice is used.

The form of the .MODEL statement is given below:

4.3.1.3 Device Libraries

HSPICE includes comprehensive libraries of standard parts. To use a librarycomponent you should use the .INCLUDE (abbreviated to .INC) statement tospecify the filename of the library model to access.

4.3.2 Independent linear sources

These sources are used to represent power supplies and to give time-dependentvalues for transient analysis.

AC-mag is the magnitude and AC-phase is the AC phase (in degrees). The sourceis set to this value in the AC analysis. If the magnitude is omitted a valueof unity is assumed. If the phase is omitted it is assumed to be zero.

Transient specification

Any independent source may be assigned a time-varying value for transientanalysis. There are several useful specifications described below.

4.4 TYPES OF ANALYSIS

There are three main forms of analysis. In a single run of the HSPICEsimulator you may perform any combination of DC, AC and transient analysis. Torequest each type of analysis simply include a .DC , .AC or .TRAN statement.Each of these modes can include other, more specialised, analysis tools whichare requested with additional statements.

4.4.1 DC analysis

The DC analysis statement defines a DC voltage or current range to an existingindependent AC or DC source src-name. The circuit is thenanalysed at every increment incr within the specified DC voltage orcurrent range start.stop. Optionally a second source src2may be specified with associated sweep parameters. In this case the firstsource is swept over its range for each value of the second source. To invokethe DC analysis use the .DC statement described below.

4.4.1.2 Operating Point analysis

4.4.1.3 DC sensitivity analysis

.SENS ov1 <ov2> ..

ov1 Branch current or nodal voltages for DC component sensitivityanalysis.

If this analysis is requested HSPICE calculates the DC small-signalsensitivities of each specified output variable relative to everycircuit parameter. These measurements are the partial derivatives of eachoutput variable with respect to the value of a given circuit element, taken atthe operating point and normalised to the total change in output magnitudes.This may create large amount of information even for small circuits.

4.4.1.3 DC Small-signal Transfer Function

If this analysis is requested HSPICE calculates the DC small-signal value ofthe transfer function (input/output), input resistance and output resistance.

4.4.2 AC analysis

The AC small-signal analysis statement is used to perform a circuit analysisover a specified frequency range. The program first solves the DC operatingpoint of the circuit and then determines linearised small-signal models for allnon-linear devices in the circuit. To make this analysis meaningful, at leastone independentsource must be specified with an AC value. Thestart and stop values need to be specified for this analysis. The circuit isthen analysed at a number of points per decade, octave, or linear stepover the specified frequency range. The analysis is insensitive to railvoltages so a unity voltage or current source is used. The form of the ACanalysis statement is shown below.

4.4.2.2 Small-Signal Distortion

Rload The resistor element name of the output load resistor into which theoutput power is fed.

inter The number of frequency points at which a distortion measure summary isprinted.

skw2 The ratio of the second frequency F2 to the nominal frequency F1. thedefault ratio is 0.9.

refpwr Reference power. The default is 1 mW measured in dBM.

spwf Amplitude of second frequency F2 . The default is 1.0.

Calculates the distortion characteristics of the circuit in an AC small-signalsteady-state sinusoidal analysis. The analysis is performed assuming that oneor two signal frequencies are imposed at the input. The first frequency F1 isthe nominal analysis frequency set by the .AC statement. The optional secondinput frequency F2 is set implicitly by specifying skw2 (=F2/F1). Thedistortion analysis is written to the log file (.lis) and contains thefollowing measures at the load resistor:

DIM2 Intermodulation distortion, difference. Relative magnitude and phase ofF1-F2.

DIM3 Intermodulation distortion, second difference. Relative magnitude andphase of 2*(F1-F2).

HD2 Second order harmonic distortion. Relative magnitude and phase of 2*F1.

HD3 Third order harmonic distortion. Relative magnitude and phase of 3*F1.

SIM2 Intermodulation distortion, sum. Relative magnitude and phase of F1+F2.

4.4.2.3 Noise

Calculates the output noise based on the complex AC nodal voltages which inturn are based on the DC operating pint. A noise source is assumed to be notstatistically correlated to the other noise sources in the circuit. The totaloutput noise voltage is the RMS sum of the individual noise contributions.

4.4.3 Transient analysis

This analysis causes HSPICE to compute the output variables as a function oftime. The circuit is analysed at each time increment within this period. Thisanalysis is sensitive to rail voltages and therefore clipping occurs whensupply voltages are exceeded. The transient analysis statement is shownbelow.

tstep Suggested computing time increment. This is modified automaticallyby HSPICE if necessary.

tstop Time at which transient analysis stops.

tstart If tstart is omitted it is assumed to be zero.

4.4.3.2 Fourier Analysis

ov1, ov2 Output variables for which the analysis is required.

This causes HSPICE to perform Fourier analysis as part of the transientanalysis.

4.4.4 Pole/Zero Analysis

output Output variable. Any node voltage or branch current.

This analysis uses the Muller method to calculate the roots of the networktransfer function polynomials and reports the results in the HSPICE log(.lis) file.

4.5 MISCELLANEOUS CONTROL STATEMENTS

There are many extra options for controlling simulation. These can usually bespecified by adding a .OPTIONS statement (anywhere in the HSPICE file).

This is an interactive digital waveform processor which may be used to displayand manipulate the output from HSPICE simulations.

Invoke ViewTrace by double-clicking on the ViewTrace icon in the PowerviewCockpit. You will see a dialogue box (Fig. 5.1) where you can enter the nameof your waveform file. You must enter a name here. The file extension must beincluded. If you click on the All box you will see all the valid HSPICEoutput files in the current project.

When ViewTrace starts it displays the ViewTrace window such as the exampleshown in Fig 5.2. You can use the File commands to read and write otherwaveform files.

Note the following features of the ViewTrace window shown in Fig. 5.2.

Names Region Contains names of waveforms displayed in Waveforms region.Names which have been hidden or deleted do not appear. Names may be selectedby clicking or dragging with the left mouse button.

Values Region Shows value of each waveform at the current 'Point'. You canadjust the 'Point' position.

Waveform Region Shows a graphic representation of each waveform.

(Y) Axis Vertical axis. For digital waveforms this is dimensionless andsimply labelled 'Digital'.

(X) Axis Horizontal axis. Gives a time scale corresponding to the portionof the simulation in the wave region.

Point & Mark Moveable points which can be positioned anywhere in theWaveforms region. Used in conjunction with the Info box to measure coordinatesand differences.

5.1 VIEWTRACE MENU COMMANDS

This section details some of the commands which you may find useful. Not allViewTrace commands are relevant for HSPICE waveform analysis.

5.1.1 ViewTrace File Menu

The File commands are used to open and close HSPICE output files.

File È Open Allows you to open another waveform file forediting.

File È Write Allows you to save your waveform file. You will begiven a list of filetypes (CSDF, PWL, GEN, CMD, BAD) which may be used. It isimportant that you save waveforms as CSDF (Common Simulation Data Format) files.

5.1.2 ViewTrace View Menu

This provides facilities to move around the waveforms but it is easier (andmuch quicker) to use the Function keys whose assignments are shown in Fig.5.3.

5.1.3 ViewTrace Change Menu

Change È Signal È Name Renames a selected signal. Thenew name appears in the ViewTrace names region. This should be used to placemeaningful names on traces ready for producing hard-copy.

Change È Axis È Type Allows you to change the form of theaxis display. Select the axis in the ViewTrace window with the left mousebutton. Then select a type from the dialogue box shown in Fig 5.4.

Change È Axis È Label Allows you change the namedisplayed on any vertical or horizontal axis. Select the axis in the ViewTracewindow with the left mouse button.

Change È Axis È Grid Allows you to display or remove thegrid for any vertical or horizontal axis. Select the axis in the ViewTracewindow with the left mouse button.

Change È Signal È Colour Allows you to change the displayedcolour for a selected signal. You can choose the colour from a palette.

Change È Display È Info Allows you to turn the Info box onor off. The Info box is a small, moveable box which displays the current X-Ycoordinates of the Point, the Mark, their difference and their slope.

5.1.4 ViewTrace Signal Menu

Signal È Math Provides a variety of mathematical operation whichcan be used to modify and create signals. The available operations arepresented in a dialogue box which is shown in Fig. 5.5.

Signal È FFT Performs a Fast Fourier Transform on all currentlydisplayed signals and displays the transform in a new window.

5.1.5 ViewTrace Axis Menu

This menu provides facilities for splitting, merging various axes etc. so as topresent the waveforms in the most suitable way.

Axis È Add Creates a new vertical axis containing only selectedsignals from the ViewTrace window. Before using this command select (with theleft mouse button) the signals you want to appear on the new axis.

Axis È Join Joins two or more selected vertical axes, combining allsignals. Before using this command select (with the left mouse button) theaxes you want to join.

Axis È Remove Deletes a vertical axis from the ViewTrace window.

Axis È Split Splits signals on a selected axis into two groups,creating a new axis with the selected signals. Useful for displaying signalswith widely varying ranges. Before using this command select (with the leftmouse button) the signals you want to appear on the new axis.Before creating any plots using ViewTrace you should ensure that you have aplot spooling directory defined. Unless you already have one, you will need tocreate a directory sysplt in your home directory by entering thecommand mkdir ~/sysplt from a command shell.

6.1 LASER PRINTS

High quality A4 and A3 laser prints of simulation waveforms may be producedfrom the University central laser printers. You must first create aPostScript plot file for each waveform with the n È Plot Setupand n È Plot Go commands which are available within the ViewTracefacility under the red-square menu. You may then submit these files forprinting as you would for any other files.

NB. You will be charged for laser printing. Refer to the documentsproduced by Information Systems.

1. Create your print files.

n È Plot Setup Define the plotting parameters:

Set the plotting device to POSTSCRIPT

Set the paper size to A4 or A3 as required

2. Send print files to printer

The print files are created in your current project directory. Eachfile may be printed with the lp command using the appropriate optionsor with the OpenWindows Print Tool.

e.g. lp -d paylaser name.001p

NB. The correct printer queues are paylaser for A4 Postscript filesand a3ps for A3 PostScript files.

Your prints will be delivered to the pigeon holes by the computer room on the4th floor of the main building.

6.2 DOT MATRIX PRINTS

Dot matrix printers are provided in each Sun laboratory for quick printing.You will not be charged for dot-matrix prints. Output can be sent directly tothese printers from the n È Plot Setup and n È Plot Go commandswhich are available within the ViewDraw and ViewTrace facilities under thered-square menu.

MacSpice simulates and analyses electronic circuits that can range in complexity from a single resistor to an integrated circuit comprising tens-of-thousands of devices. It has users who range in experience from novices to retired integrated circuit designers. It is used at various universities internationally for research and teaching.

MacSpice runs on Intel architecture Apple Macintosh computers. It is compatible with, Berkeley Spice 3f5 but incorporates many improvements to Spice 3f5 – from simple bug-fixes to entirely new commands, algorithms and solution strategies. For example: the memory leaks that affected Spice 3f5 have been cured; new algorithms have been developed to facilitate the simulation of large circuits, and to reduce simulation time; MacSpice provides a robust multi-parameter optimizer and facilities for inter-process communication with other applications.

What MacSpice Does

Circuit simulation is a way of building and testing virtual models of electronic devices. It is usually cheaper and quicker to simulate a design than to build a prototype. MacSpice requires a text-file description of the circuit as input. This 'netlist' is a list of components and the nodes they connect to. Users may prepare netlists with a text editor, or derive them from a circuit diagram using a third-party schematic-capture application. MacSpice then builds a numerical model of the circuit and analyses this.

A command interpreter (shell) is used to specify the types of analyses that are required and how the results should be processed, saved or displayed. The high quality of the MacSpice command interpreter makes the automation of tasks straightforward.

Introduction

There are few aircraft in the world that truly deserve the title of icon. There are the interesting, the unique, even the special. but only a handful of aircraft ever reach icon. The Boeing 747 is such an aircraft. It's certainly interesting, defiantly unique, and absolutely special. Its story is well known. From the original plan to create a cargo aircraft for the Air Force to the construction of its own factory as they built the first models, the 747 has plenty of stories to share about itself. Now in the twilight of her career, the 747 continues to fly today, 50 years since it first left Everett. As you may have gathered, I'm a huge fan. My first flight was onboard a classic 747. Aged 8, I stood in the cockpit of the mighty beast and saw the Atlantic at 30000+ feet. It was love at first sight. When PMDG announced they were remaking their classic 747 Queen of the Skies (QOTS), well a little shout of glee came out! I still have the FSX version I got as a birthday gift in 2008. To say the old girl looked tired by today's standards would be an understatement. Despite its looks, under the hood the 747 QOTS was pretty advanced, with many of the complex systems in place to challenge any would be pilot. I learnt a lot from that add on, mostly that my system was too poor to get a decent frame rate.

The arrival of the new QOTS II for P3D v4 made my heart beat a tad faster. I was once told I couldn't improve on Mozart, can PMDG improve on their original?

Second Coming but the Third Version

With any new version of anything, numbering can be confusing. For example, I'm typing this on my iPad Air 2, or an iPad 6, which is not an iPad Pro, which of course is now new and improved so the new iPad Pro isn't the original iPad Pro, more like an iPad Pro 2, wait what was my point? Ah yes, naming confusion. The release of the 747 QOTS II is actually the PMDG 747-400 v3. It's even called that by the boss himself. Confused? In truth both titles are correct. This is indeed the third version of the iconic Boeing, the first being released for FS2004. It's also the second version of the QOTS edition, first published for FSX. For the sake of this review, let's stick with the acronym QOTS II, or maybe just 'the new one'.

This new version offers a substantial update for the original FSX edition. Versions for Prepar3D v3 and v4 join the new FSX, with the Prepar3D v4 version being 64bit.

Once downloaded the aircraft installs with ease. Along with the aircraft itself, PMDG installs their very own 'Operation Centre'. Free lrtimelapse pro 3 2 1 for mac pro. This is a one stop shop in keeping all your PMDG Aircraft up to date, as well as allowing you to look through, download and install new liveries for your 747. Introduced with the 777 a few years ago, the ops centre is a pretty cool feature. Alongside the main installer, you also get a comprehensive set of manuals for the 747, including a nice introduction manual, a great tutorial and full versions of the FCOM and QRH manuals. There's plenty to get your teeth into there.

Model Features

More Than Just a Single Type

With the aircraft installed it was time to get my favourite airlines in sim. As standard, all aircraft come with the PMDG colours as a livery. If you think PMDG is going to skimp on just a single variant, think again. In total, there are seven unique variants to the 747-400 family, and three engine types as well.

The 400D is just one of the many different models included

Alongside the standard -400 model are the -400BCF or Boeing Converted Freighter, the -400D, a specific version developed mainly for the Japanese domestic market, the -400ER or Extended Range, and the -400ERF or Extended Range Freighter. The -400F and finally the -400M or combi, which has both a passenger cabin and a large freight hold. Each version has their own unique differences, from number of fuel tanks to lack of winglets, and each version has different performance. Each version also has its own unique model, so if you're flying the Rolls Royce engined aircraft, it won't feature the General Electric engine on the wings. Already you're getting the feeling that there's a forensic level of detail going on here.

Into the Sim

Loading the aircraft is much easier than in the original FSX version. No longer do you need to load a default flight with the C172, then load the aircraft. PMDG have been back to the original code and rewritten it for the new age. Just pick your gate and choose you're aircraft and voila, all is good.

Once I'm in, my first impressions are akin to 'oh my!'. Compared to the old QOTS, the new version is crisp and clear. Externally the aircraft has been remade and compared to its predecessor, things are looking good. The main textures are all very nice, but on closer inspection, things are not as sharp as perhaps they should be. Warning labels are often just token blocks of colour. Even the engine labelling of Rolls Royce is low resolution. Perhaps this isn't a particularly big issue, but the arrival other recent product releases have raised the bar significantly in this regard, with almost all external labelling being high resolution and readable.

Despite the makeover, the main gear modelling could look a little better. Again, PMDG's competitors have upped the game here and in places the 747 looks a bit 'scruffy.' These are very tiny issues though, and overall the external modelling is very good.

Inside the Belly of the Whale

Once you're comfortably inside the cockpit, things get a bit serious. Given this is where you'll spend much of your time, the modelling should be top notc, and so it is. The main areas of interest being the pedestal, overhead, and MIP are as you'd expect, very well textured. There's dust, grime and fingerprints galore here. It's all very much in keeping with an aircraft that debuted in the late 80's, and was possibly last cleaned sometime around the year 2000. Aircraft are never pristine and the fact this one isn't, is very true to life. Away from the action, the rear of the cockpit is beautifully rendered, with all the labelling crisp and clear. The whole thing is very high definition, though I'm not sure I'd want to see that carpet look any sharper. All in all, a tour de force in modelling and texturing.

Also included with the 747 are various passenger cabin views. The views out over the wings are nice, and in flight you can enjoy the very nice wing flex the 747 is known for. If you turn your point of view inward though, you get a very basic cabin to look around. It's decidedly low rent and that's fine. Modelling the whole cabin in exquisite detail will blow through the 32bit virtual memory barrier and adds nothing to the sim itself. So, take it for what it is and move on.

Feature Rich

Starting with the original 737 NGX, PMDG have created a core code base that can be built on and refined. The 737 introduced service based failures, the 777 gave us accelerated time and turn around countdowns. Both of these features are present in the 747 v3. In addition, the 747 features the latest improvement, a fully functional ground crew. Now you can call your very own catering trucks, water bowser, fuel truck, and more. It's an excellent feature very much reminiscent of Aerosoft's old AES for FSX. The crew can be called manually, or if your running with the full ground turnaround options, then the ballet of trucks and bags come and go while you prepare for departure. It's a tiny bit of immersion that makes a huge difference.

Whilst the inclusion of the ground vehicles could be said to be a bit frivolous, there are other features available that make the 747 that bit more hard core.

All in the Code

Diving into the 747, it's interesting to see the frankly anal level of detail that PMDG will delve into. Take the FMC for example, in real life, the FMC has all the computing power of a 1970's PC. It often struggles to make complex calculations quickly. All this has been modelled in the sim, and the basic 8086 processor that runs the FMC chugs along slowly but accurately. That's real attention to detail, and it doesn't stop there. The ground handling has been moved 'outside the sim', bypassing the old system to produce a superbly accurate takeoff and landing roll.

While some of the cool coding remains hidden behind the surface, one of the coolest new functions is incredibly visible. As mentioned earlier, the 747 wings flex during flight. However, it's not just the movement of air that bends the wing. The 747 is above all, a large aircraft with a large thirst. A full set of tanks can keep the old girl in the air for almost 8000nm. All that fuel has to go somewhere though. The wings carry the bulk for most flights. Top the tanks off and the wings noticeably sag when sat on the ground. Decrease the load and the tips come up. Its a visual treat and shows you the depth of detail PMDG have gone into.

In-flight Performance

With everything sorted behind the scenes, it's the inflight performance that counts. This is a heavy aircraft in more ways than one. You will need to adjust your settings to get this running nicely. That said, FPS is surprisingly good. In standard 1920 x 1080 resolution, performance remains in the high 30's, even in poor weather. Es5. I do need to turn down my AI though to keep the figures up. Switching to three screens and it's a different matter. Around EGLL, even on a clear day, FPS struggles to hit 20. Add in traffic and a bit of bad weather and mid teens is more apt.

However, with good FPS, the aircraft is a joy to fly. Starting at the gate I run though the checklists and get the aircraft set up. If you don't fancy running a cold and dark setup every flight, you can always load up a specific panel state that range from power on to ready for taxi. As the aircraft starts up its worth mentioning the sound environment. Fans whir, switches and relays click and trip. It's all very immersive. The whole sound set is incredibly good, with recordings taken from the cockpit, then mastered for surround sound. Great stuff.

Pushback can be sorted from the FMC, though it's still limited to you having to guess how far back you want to go if you want to be on the taxi line when you're finished. Taxiing, the sound of the engines fill the speakers and sounds from around the cockpit once again add to the ambiance. Coupled to this, PMDG have modified the cockpit head movement, so your view 'bobs around' as you taxi anytime you hit a taxi light or bump. The Same effect can be seen on takeoff and landing.

Takeoff really gets the blood pumping as the sheer mass of the aircraft is evident. Fully loaded, you can use almost all of the runway. Lifting the nose and the leviathan lifts into the air. Once you're up though, the aircraft is really quite maneuverable. It's a real pussycat to hand fly and I was more than happy to hand fly her all the way to the cruise. At this point I have to mention the MCP or Autopilot Panel. It's often the small things which can make the difference, and the simple act of dialing in an altitude or speed is a joy. Watch as the numbers flick over mechanically. This simple animation shows a fantastic level of detail.

On long haul, it's almost inevitable that you'll fly into darkness. At night the cockpit is a joy, with the same zonal lighting introduced with the NGX. The introduction of dynamic lighting for P3D v4 can enhance the external lighting, but often at the expense of performance.

Finally, when it comes to landing, the 747 can be a handful. You'll need to watch your speeds and unlike the Boeing 777 and more modern aircraft, the 747 doesn't reduce the speeds automatically on the approach. You'll need to dial those in carefully. Slowing all that momentum isn't simple and you really need to be ahead of the aircraft on the descent. For landing though, with full flaps and a plus 5kt on my Vref speed, the Jumbo handles like a dream. So long as you remember your five stories up, landing is a dream. I made some fantastic landings in the old girl. Best advice for a good landing is to listen to the radar altimeter call outs and you'll be fine.

Summing Up

Summing up, the PMDG 747 Queen of the Skies II is much like interviewing your favourite celebrity. You're kind of a bit in awe, but at the same time, you've got to be fair. I'm a massive fan of the 747, she was my first love and even today, greet each one I see by saying 'hello gorgeous'. So it would be fair to say I have high hopes for this aircraft and I'm not disappointed. The 747 stands on the shoulders of the NGX and T777. From the service failures, the accelerated time features, and now the integrated ground service vehicles, along with a host of other features combine to make a really special aircraft. It's a complex aircraft, and you can spend hours and hours digging into the FMC systems. Couple that with integrations from HiFi's Active Sky weather radar and support for PFPX and you'll discover an aircraft simulation that's as well rounded a product as you'll ever come across.

That said, it's not without issues. The modelling and texturing is a little sub-par compared to other new products. It may sound harsh but given the price of $140 at the time of writing, the whole package has to be exceptional. Performance is also an issue. All that complexity comes at a price and compromises need to be made to ensure a good experience. Flying at large airports like Heathrow or Frankfurt online or with AI traffic and the sim can become a slideshow.

The downsides however are small compared to the whole. The 747 is now approaching the twilight of her career, though the last flying days are decades away. In a story that's already spanned nearly 50 years, the 747 is still the Queen of the Skies. The PMDG 747 QOTS II is a fantastic tribute the old girl, capturing the magic of the 747 for simmers to enjoy time and again. This is the kind of aircraft you'll never fully master, instead it'll be a good friend and a great companion along the virtual airways.

In 1910 a young farm-hand, Hermanus Vissers, started off as a contractor in the Haarlemmermeer polder, a pioneer area of agricultural mechanisation in the Netherlands. In order to extend his business, Vissers bought a spreader, a mower and a reaper binder. He also entered into the trading business by selling fertiliser, seed potatoes, seed and onions to farmers.
1947
At the first post-war trade fair in Utrecht, Vicon presented their improved version of the Belgian-design conventional potato planter. The machine became a tremendous success. Vicon then decided to concentrate on the manufacturing of machines.
1949
In 1949, Vicon acquired the manufacturing and marketing rights for an ingenious Dutch invention, the fingerwheel rake. Importers flocked to Nieuw-Vennep seeking to acquire the exclusive distribution rights for their specific markets.
1955
Vicon is moving into new premises in Nieuw-Vennep. A complete new factory is built on the site where Kverneland Group Nieuw-Vennep BV is still based today.
1958
At the Verona trade fair in Italy in 1958, the pendulum-type fertiliser-spreader system, invented by the Italian fertiliser merchant Luigi Steffenino, was presented. A contract for worldwide manufacturing and marketing was signed, but it took years to turn the design into a true farm implement. Today, more than one million pendulum spreaders have been sold worldwide.
1961
A Dutch arable farmer has a brilliant idea for a beet harvester with a unique system of rotating lifters. Vicon turns the concept into a successful harvesting machine that performs well even in the wettest of soil (clay) conditions, where competitive machines get stuck
1963
Vicon further develops the spading machine invented by Prof. Horowitz who also invented the world famous Philishave razor. The machine is widely praised for its excellent performance but attracts few buyers. Farmers stick to their plough.
What could have been a revolution in soil cultivation ends in 1970 when production is stopped.
1968
The first Vicon disc mower has two large discs each fitted with two big knives. A rotor fitted above the knives transports the grass and delivers it into a swath. Cutting performance was excellent but power requirements were high so development was stopped and alternative solutions explored.
1976
The triangular discs are introduced on the Vicon disc mowers. This has been a Vicon trademark ever since and built the reputation of the high cutting quality, associated with the Vicon mowers.
1977
As the first agricultural machinery manufacturer Vicon installs a powder paint system providing a corrosion resistant shiny finish hard as steel.
1978
Vicon acquires a small machinery manufacturer in the North of Holland specializing in silage equipment and extends her product range with a spade type silage cutter (for clamps up to 2 m high). The machine is rapidly followed by the introduction of a saw type cutter for clamps higher than 2 m.
1981
In 1981, all Vicon shares were aquired by Thyssen Bornemisza, a large international industrial group. They regarded the agricultural industry as a major growth market and were looking for further expansion and extension of the product range. Further acquisitions included French baler manufacturer Rivierre Casalis.
By the early eighties, Vicon had already pioneered the integration of microelectronics in fertiliser spreaders (spreading computer) and big square balers. Even back in 1985 Vicon was pioneering the ISOBUS standard, a universal control system being taken up by most European manufacturers.
1983
In 1983, Vicon makes a break-through with micro-electronics for agricultural machinery. One of the key developments is the HP 1600 high density big baler, which is the first electro-hydraulically operated baler that is capable of producing high quality baled silage.
1984
New companies were acquired both in Europe and North America, such as the Alleys sprayers in Belgium. This acquisition laid the foundation for Vicon’s involvement in sprayers.
1989
In 1989 the world’s first baler with a pre-cutting device is introduced, setting a new standard for baled silage quality.
1990
In 1990, Vicon, PZ and Deutz-Fahr implements were integrated into a new company called Greenland, owned by Thyssen Bornemisza.
1998
In 1998 the Norwegian Kverneland Group acquires Greenland and Vicon. The two manufacturers’ product ranges complemented each other well. Vicon’s worldwide distribution is considerably strengthened, especially in Eastern Europe, the CIS countries and China.
2004
The innovative aluminium bonded spray boom was introduced in 2004, and illustrates the dedication of Vicon to look for new solutions and integrate new material into the products.
2010
Vicon celebrates its 100 years within farm mechanisation, and is one of the two strong brands of the Kverneland Group, Vicon and Kverneland. Today Vicon equipment is sold in more than 80 countries via own sales companies and distributors.

The Software is a “commercial item,” as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct 1995), consisting of “commercial computer software” and “commercial computer software documentation,” as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995). Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.72024 (June 1995), all U.S. Government End Users shall acquire the Software with only those rights set forth herein.

8. GENERAL

This Agreement shall be interpreted according to and governed by Japanese law without reference to principles of conflict of laws. Any dispute or procedure shall be heard before the Tokyo District Court in Japan. If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds any portion of this Agreement to be unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect. All legal notices, notice of disputes and demands for arbitration, and any other notice which purports to change these provisions or to assert legal entitlements must be sent in writing to:

9. ENTIRE AGREEMENT

This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to use of the SOFTWARE and any accompanying written materials and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings or agreements, written or oral, regarding the subject matter of this Agreement.

10. AMENDMENT

Yamaha may amend, revise or update this Agreement at its discretion. Any change or update that Yamaha makes to this Agreement will be effective after you agree with the updated terms of this Agreement or use this SOFTWARE.
